She was the daughter of the late Victor and Edith Ryder of Harwich, Massachusetts and a descendant of John Alden. Ruth was born at Brockton Hospital on February 1, 1931. Her parents moved to the Cape and she graduated from Harwich high school in 1949. She started her 35 year career as a telephone operator in Harwich and eventually moved to the Hyannis office. She belonged to the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Eastern Star. She also worked in her father's business, Victor S. Ryder's Auction Gallery.
