I'm a bit of a makeup addict. I see something pretty, and I have to have it. It doesn't matter if I already have a similar shade or not, I still get it.

I knew I had a slight problem when I bought a professional sized makeup train case and couldn't fit my makeup in it. I still have baskets of brand new items and specialty items that I don't use all the time.

I knew my makeup addiction was really bad when I showed up to the theater with my makeup and the Mary Kay girl who was also helping with makeup said, "Wow. That's a lot of makeup!"

Ahem.

Despite having such a collection, I could not get a blush that I liked. I wanted a hint of color, and I like a brownish or brownish pink shade.

I found a few, but one was the exact right shade but too shimmery. Another one was way too dark. Yet another one was too brown and not enough pink.

I've made other cosmetics, so I decided to make own DIY cream blush recipe. After researching ingredients and experimenting, I came up with this super simple two ingredient homemade blush.

I use both a cream blush and a powder. I like the cream because it's light, and I can build it up. It's great for every day. I normally use a powder for a more dramatic effect.

This DIY cream blush recipe can also be used as a lip tint. The shea butter is a great way to moisturize your lips, especially if they are dry.

You can also use a different shade and use this as a highlighter. I like to use one of them just under my highlighter for some depth.

SHEA BUTTER

The base of this DIY homemade cream blush recipe is shea butter. I used shea for a few reasons. I always have it on the shelf, and it's super moisturizing and is said to help tone your skin.

It's also easy to work and melts on contact with your skin.

Shea butter in high in vitamin A, which is an important ingredient for anti-aging creams and serums. Vitamin A is said to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Shea butter is also high in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants help reduce the damage from free radicals, so it's also anti-aging.

Shea butter is moisturizing, so it's a good choice to use if you have dry skin. Even if you have oily skin, shea butter won't make your skin overly oily.

One of the reasons that I chose shea butter and didn't add more oils or butters is because shea butter ranks a 0 on the comedogenic scale. This means it won't clog your pores or cause breakouts.

COLORANT

You have your choice of colorant for this DIY homemade blush recipe. You can use cocoa powder for brown. I just used the same cocoa powder from the grocery store.

You can also use mica powder. Mica gives it a great color, and it's easy to work work into the shea butter.

Mica is a natural mineral dust. It's used to naturally color many types of cosmetics and soaps. It is reflective, so it will make your homemade cream blush shimmery.

I like that mica also comes in a range of colors. I bought a set of 24 colors last year. I've made so many different projects and have barely used any. This set will last me forever.

I used both mica, cocoa powder, and a mix of the both of them for these three blushes.
I made three homemade blushes, so I used:

  • Cocoa powder
  • 1/2 pink mica and 1/2 rose gold mica
  • 1/2 pink mica and 1/2 cocoa powder

I made the brown as a blush and the rose gold as a highlighter. I usually use this under my highlighter for a little more depth.

Cream Blush Directions

STEP #1

Melt the shea butter in double boiler. Heat until melted.

I don't recommend heating shea butter in the microwave. If you overheat shea butter, it can get grainy. While you can use a microwave, it does tend to get grainy, which doesn't feel great on your skin.

STEP #2

Pour the melted shea butter into an empty container.

STEP #3

Add 1/4 teaspoon of colorant or to taste. Stir well.

It does tend to clump. The best way to add it is to carefully sprinkle a little bit of colorant and stir. Then add more and stir.

Keep stirring as it sets up. I gave it a stir every five minutes or so so the mica and cocoa powder didn't fall to the bottom.

Let it cool completely. You can use it as soon as its set up.

I use my fingers to apply it, but you can use a blush brush if you'd like.

This DIY homemade cream blush recipe has a light coverage. You can let it dry and then add another layer to build the colors.

You can also use one shade, let it dry, and then add another shade on top to mix the colors.
