The best part of this recipe is that you don’t even need to knead the dough.

You just mix the ingredients and let nature do the rest.

You can make it the night before, let it rise all night, and bake it for breakfast.

It just takes 45 minutes in the oven. Eat it while it’s hot with butter and jam, with your favorite soup, or use it to make delicious toast and sandwiches.

After tasting homemade bread, you will never buy store-bought bread again!

Recipe tips;

  1. Make sure the water you use is warm. If it is too cold, the gluten will not develop properly, and if it is too hot, it will kill the yeast. Warm water is key
  2. For best results, use all-purpose flour. If you want to use whole wheat flour, substitute up to one cup all-purpose with whole wheat.
  3. If you want to jazz things up, you can add chopped garlic, onion, or Parmesan cheese
  4. Make sure your baking dish or dutch oven is inside the oven while preheating
  5. After taking your bread out of the oven, let it cool on a rack. This keeps the bottom crisp

Answering Your Burning Questions:

  1. Can You Use Bread Flour For Easy Homemade Dutch Oven Bread? All-purpose flour works best for dutch oven bread. If you use bread flour, I would recommend you knead the dough. Bread flour needs kneading for the gluten to develop properly. This is not the case with all-purpose flour.
  2. What Can I Use Instead Of A Dutch Oven To Bake The Bread? If you don’t own a dutch oven, you can use any 2.5-2.75 qt round baking dish with a lid.

This depends entirely on you! Some environments are better suited for bread fermentation than others. Looks like the temperature in your house was a good one for this purpose! If you loved it the first time, I wouldn’t change a thing. But if you want to try and see what happens, try leaving it for 8 hours let’s say? Let me know which one you liked best!

Bread flour has a higher gluten content and needs a little bit more work to develop the elasticity in that extra gluten. It may not be as soft, but you can definitely try it out and let us know how it turned out!

Such a simple bread recipe. This is my go to when I want a nice crusty bread with homemade soups. Question – how do you suggest storing the bread? (Paper bag, zip lock, on the counter, etc.)
    Thanks!

    Reply

    • The BEST No Knead Bread Recipe { Dutch Oven Bread} (39)100krecipes

The best way for me is to store it in a paper bag and in an airtight container if you can. And keep it on the counter. Bread will keep in good condition for 3-4 days. The crust will not be as crisp, but the bread will stay soft.

Alert: Dumb question coming! I’m trying this now. I’m at the point where I’m letting it sit in a draft free room so I’ve put it in the spare room and closed the door. That room doesn’t get any heat and it’s a little cool in there. Is the cool room going to make a difference on the outcome?

I’m so sorry if I’m a bit late to answering your question! It’s better to let it rest inside the oven (turned off). The cool temperature will make it a little slow to rise, but please let us know how it turned out!

I’m so confused about the yeast thing. When I buy active dry yeast it says you need to activate it. But your recipe doesn’t say that. Are you just putting 2 teaspoons of that dry yeast into the recipe?

    Reply

They recommend you activate it to prove it is still alive because if it is too old it dies. Generally what you buy at the store is new enough but if you have some sitting at home for too, it might be time to buy new. If you feel better activating it, please do so.

No, you’re not supposed to add more flour. It is a sticky dough, though. All you need to do is place it onto a floured surface and fold it to form a ball, but it’s a sticky one. Did you check the step photos? That’s what it looks like

Hi! I am wondering if your yeast was alright. Next time proof it. Place it in a bowl with a bit of lukewarm water (not too hot or it will die), a teaspoon of sugar and wait for it to bubble up. If it does not bubble up, it probably is inactive and you have to buy more.

FAQs

Is a Dutch oven the best way to bake bread? ›

But the real magic comes from the cast-iron Dutch oven, the perfect vessel for baking bread. It acts like an oven-within-the-oven, maintaining a high and steady heat that transforms this sticky dough into a gorgeous round loaf with a crisp crust and excellent crumb structure.

What is the best hydration for no-knead bread? ›

No-Knead bread, especially when using the No-Touch technique is very forgiving as long as you stay between 70 and 90 percent!

What is the advantage of no-knead bread? ›

It's easy to see the appeal of the “no-knead” approach in bread baking: minimal effort produces maximum flavor. By simply mixing up your dough and giving it an extended rising period, you can enjoy gorgeous, golden loaves without having kneaded a thing.

What is the best size Dutch oven for baking bread? ›

You just need a lid to cover it and the proper heat-conducting cast-iron material, and your bread will come out perfectly every time. Size & Shape: Look for a 6- to 7-quart, round Dutch oven. Anything much bigger will cause the bread to spread out and go flat.

Should I put parchment paper in Dutch oven for bread? ›

You can shape your dough on a rectangular sheet of parchment paper, then use it to safely lower the dough into your Dutch oven. Once your gorgeous loaf of bread is finished cooking, the parchment paper makes removing the loaf super easy.

Why is my Dutch oven bread so dense? ›

Why is my bread dense: Usually bread will be too dense when there is too much flour. Keep in mind this dough will be pretty sticky, do not add more flour than specified. Other factors that come into play are humidity and age of flour. Little yeast, long rise, sticky dough are keys to a good, light loaf.

Should you stretch and fold no knead bread? ›

In side-by-side tests, we discovered that 90 seconds of extra work is all it takes to transform no-knead bread from good to great. Three simple folds, each taking about 30 seconds, will do the trick.

What if my no knead bread dough is too dry? ›

My dough was too dry.

You did not aerate your flour before measuring. Flour always settles in the bag or container and must be aerated before measuring; otherwise, you will be using too much flour. To aerate flour, using a large spoon or spatula, stir the flour around to incorporate some air.

Is no knead bread better than kneaded bread? ›

Is there really much of a difference? Most of the difference is about time. If you like a straightforward bread made with flour, water, salt and yeast, or that same basic bread with mixed grain flours or add-ins such as nuts, seeds, and porridge, then no knead bread can be a great way to go.

What are the disadvantages of no-knead dough method? ›

No-knead (Passive): In this mix-to-combine, long-fermented method, time is used to maximum effect for developing both flavor and strength. Pros: Dough develops flavor during extended fermentation. Easy. Cons: Uncontrolled fermentation may cause variable impacts to crumb structure and flavor.

What happens if you don't knead bread long enough? ›

A failure to knead dough (unless you're working with a no-knead recipe) can lead to: Poor gluten development: When you don't knead bread, the gluten won't form properly. This can result in a lack of elasticity and strength, meaning your final product is likely to come out of the oven dense and heavy.

Why does no-knead bread rise? ›

Finally, the folds stimulate fermentation by encouraging the yeast to produce more gas, which stretches the dough further, developing more gluten. This improved structure made the dough easier to shape and allowed the final loaf to rise higher in the oven.

What is the best temperature to bake bread in a Dutch oven? ›

Preheat your home oven to 450°F (230°C) with a Dutch oven inside for 30 to 45 minutes. Line a pizza peel, inverted baking sheet, or cutting board with parchment paper. Turn out your proofed bread dough onto the parchment paper (trim the paper to fit, if necessary) Score your dough.

Do you bake bread with lid on or off Dutch oven? ›

A Dutch oven is a catch-all term for enclosing your loaf inside a chamber for the first 20 minutes of the bake and then baking without the lid for the next 20 minutes. Enclosing a loaf like this in the initial part of the bake helps the loaf to achieve really good oven spring.

What size Dutch oven does Ina Garten use? ›

An enamelled cast-iron Dutch oven is a kitchen classic, and of course Ina (who has a well-documented love affair with Paris) trusts French heritage brand Le Creuset. She prefers the brand's round, 5.5 quart Dutch oven because it's great for soups, stews and braising.

What type of oven is best for baking bread? ›

Professional bakers typically have deck ovens specifically designed for baking bread that get and stay hotter and include features like steam injection, the key to achieving a crust so thin and crisp it shatters when you break off a piece.

What are the benefits of a Dutch oven for bread? ›

The high heat inside the Dutch oven brings the water inside the dough to evaporate. Because you have the lid on top, the steam is trapped inside and creates a hot and steamy environment. This helps your bread to stay moist and flexible so it can rise and expand easily.

What is the best thing to bake bread in? ›

Baking Vessels

A cloche or Dutch oven is the best choice for baking artisan style loaves of bread. They provide the ideal amount and timing of steam to the dough, and they tolerate the high temperatures that maximize oven spring and make a classic crispy crust.

How do you keep bread dough from sticking to a Dutch oven? ›

Add coarse corn meal or wheat bran to the Dutch oven before adding your dough. Use two pieces of parchment paper below the dough. Remove the dough from the Dutch oven when it's almost finished baking.
