ENFIELD, CT — After decades of serving the Enfield community from its headquarters on North Main St. in Thompsonville, the Enfield Recreation Department has moved into its new home in the old main office and D-wing area of the former Enrico Fermi High School at 124 North Maple St.

Access to the department is via Door 1, formerly the main entrance of the school.

The move is part of a recently-approved consolidation plan of town buildings, which involves shifting several departments into the former Alcorn School, the Enfield Express and the Enfield Senior Center, as well as the Fermi building.

Under terms of the plan:

  • The Department of Social Services, including Youth Services, would move into the former Alcorn School, with the Social Services building at 110 High St. to be sold;
  • The Transportation office would move from 110 High St. to the Senior Center;
  • Building & Grounds and the Recreation Department would move into the former Fermi building at 124 North Maple St., with the Building & Grounds location at 52 Prospect St. to be sold;
  • Assessment and Revenue would move from Town Hall to the Enfield Express at 800 Enfield St.;
  • A multi-media video conference center would be constructed in Town Hall;
  • Renovation of the gymnasium at the former St. Adalbert School on Alden Ave. would be completed by January 2022;
  • The old Strand Theater and Angelo Lamagna Activity Center buildings at 17-19 North Main St. would be demolished, and the land sold.

During urban renewal, a new neighborhood activity center was built, named after longtime Enfield sportsman Angelo Lamagna. The multitude of programs offered by the town, including Youth Services and the Recreation Department, have long since outgrown the facility, which has always suffered from extremely limited parking.

The new location provides ample parking, a welcoming office area and expanded space for programming. Six classrooms in the old D-wing will be utilized for recreation programs.

"The recreation staff is very excited to have moved our offices," Deputy Director of Recreation Services Mary Keller said. "Located in the old administration wing of the former Fermi High School, our office space has expanded. And being newly renovated, it is bright and cheery. We look forward to working in the same building as most of our wonderful programs – Tons O’ Fun Summer Camp, Dolphins swim team, basketball and so much more now that we have expanded indoor program space. The new location offers exciting outdoor space as well, which was limited at the former location. We can't wait until we can get back to recreation in person to share our beautiful new space with everyone."

Town Manager Chris Bromson told Patch, "The town is very excited to have completed the first phase of our building consolidation plan. The new quarters for recreation are truly incredible. The site offers a spacious lobby area for residents, as well as a conference room, and long-needed office space and working areas for staff. This will enable them to continue the amazing job they have been doing at Lamagna. Our Building and Grounds has once again risen to the occasion to accomplish this move in record time. Not only will this enable enhanced services to our residents, but it will also have significant cost savings into the future."
